Profit per mile =(Job payment – fuel costs – other expenses) / total miles driven
To be more accurate, you could:
Track your earnings for each job or shift
Subtract costs like fuel, maintenance, insurance and surcharges
Include any additional expenses like parking or tolls
Divide the remaining profit by the total miles driven
Hypothetically, let’s say you complete a delivery job that pays £120 and you drive 100 miles total.
Your costs are:
Fuel: £25
ULEZ and parking: £10
Estimated maintenance: £15
Total costs: £50
Total profit is £120 – £50 = £70
(Note – these figures are for example purposes only)
Calculating this regularly (e.g. weekly, monthly) helps you identify which jobs are worth taking.
Over time, you can use it to:
Choose higher profit routes
Reduce unnecessary miles
Manage running costs
Build a more sustainable business
